You watch the mesmerizing passes, the lightning-fast dribbles, and the game-winning goals that send the stands into a frenzy. But behind this spectacle, filled with lights and noise, there is Race runs across the grass in complete silence. In modern soccer, a professional soccer player doesn’t just play with his feet—he plays with his lungs, his heart, and his burning muscles.

The shocking fact that might completely change your perspective on this sport is that a professional player runs, on average, the equivalent of a full 10 kilometers in every match. Imagine that! It’s a full 10-kilometer race, held every 90 minutes—not on a flat, paved road, but on grass, under terrifying physical, mental, and crowd pressure, with violent collisions and fierce competition for the ball. Today’s soccer no longer relies on the skill of standing still and passing the ball as it did in the 1980s; it has evolved into a game based on high-pressure defense (Gegenpressing) and quick transitions. This isn’t just a game with a ball—it’s Marathon Compact and explosive, it ingeniously combines high endurance with explosive speed. This hidden number is the true bridge connecting you—the runner pounding the asphalt in the morning—to the star whose name you cheer for at night. Both know all too well the meaning of pain, and what it means to keep running when your body is screaming to stop.

How is this measured? GPS technology in professional sports stadiums

How can we verify these numbers? You may have wondered at some point about that strange black piece of clothing that looks like a “sports bra” and that players wear under their jerseys—it’s clearly visible when they take off their jerseys to celebrate a game-winning goal or when they swap jerseys after the game ends. This item isn’t just a trend in sports fashion—it’s mobile operating room small in weight.

This vest contains a state-of-the-art GPS-based tracking device on the back (specifically between the shoulder blades to ensure signal reception). The training system no longer relies on guesswork, coaches’ manual calculations, or the “expert eye of the coach,” as was the case in the past. Today, these precise devices capture thousands of data points in just a few seconds. Not only do they measure the total distance covered by the player with centimeter-level precision, but they also go into incredible detail: they count the number of sprints, monitor heart rate, and track changes in acceleration and sudden deceleration that damage muscle fibers.

What’s more, this technology generates heat maps that show where players expended their energy and their positioning on the field. In modern locker rooms, there’s nowhere to hide. The coach knows exactly—based on the numbers—who ran a full 10 kilometers and who just lazed around walking in the center circle. The statistics here are conclusive and uncompromising, yet they clearly tell the story of the immense human effort that transforms today’s players into tireless running machines throughout the entire 90-minute match.

The Difference Between Positions: Unfair Running Assignments

This distance of 10 kilometers is the team’s overall average, but within the penalty box, running duties are distributed with a stark inequality dictated by tactics. The modern midfielder—specifically the so-called “box-to-box” midfielder—is unquestionably the team’s top runner. This player can easily exceed 11 or 12 kilometers per game; he is tactically required to defend fiercely within his own penalty area, then sprint at top speed to support the forwards and provide them with crucial passes in the opponent’s half within a matter of seconds—and repeat this nonstop.

On the wings, we find the modern wingers and fullbacks. These are the kings of “explosive runs.” A winger may not cover a greater total distance than a central midfielder, but he covers his ground through short, very fast sprints that exceed 30 km/h. This type of running requires enormous anaerobic energy and depletes muscle reserves much faster than steady running.

What about the heart of the defense? A defender runs in a completely different and distinctive way. He rarely runs long, continuous stretches forward; instead, his effort relies on smart positioning, lateral runs, quick retreats, jumping, and strong physical tackles, ending the match with an average of 8 to 9 kilometers. As for the goalkeeper, even though he remains confined to the penalty area, he covers a distance of 4 to 5 kilometers over the course of 90 minutes! Simply pacing back and forth nervously, moving to cover angles, directing teammates, and making short sprints to cut off long passes—all this effort is equivalent to a light evening jog for a beginner runner.

An Interesting Comparison: The Arab Runner vs. the Professional

Now we come to the fun part of the comparison. Who runs more during the week? The professional athlete who earns millions and lives in the spotlight, or you, the passionate Arab runner who wakes up at dawn to go for a run before the rush hour traffic and crowded streets?

An elite player covers between 22 and 45 kilometers per week, which includes one or two matches per week and on-field training sessions. This depends on the player’s position on the field, the number of weekly matches, and the timing of training sessions during the soccer season. It’s true that professional players usually train twice a day, but the second session—especially during the soccer season—is mostly spent in the weight room or at the tactical board, not on the field. As for running distance, that’s covered only during field sessions, as shown by GPS devices.

Now, let’s take a look at your training schedule. If you’re following a moderate training plan for amateur runners and go out for a run four times a week—covering 5 km on two separate days to loosen up your muscles, running 8 km on your tempo run day, and then dedicating your rest day to your weekly long run of 15 km— Your weekly total is 33 kilometers! Yes, the numbers are interestingly close, and they show that you’re not far off from them.

As a recreational runner, you’re actually competing with elite athletes in terms of the distance you cover each week. The only fundamental difference lies in the “nature of the effort.” As a runner, you’re in control of your own decisions; you run with a steady stride and a regular rhythm that carves up the asphalt, and you control your breathing. Meanwhile, he runs in a chaotic and unpredictable environment that requires sudden changes in direction, coming to a complete stop, and then sprinting at top speed to catch a bouncing ball—all based on his opponent’s movements. But in the true dictionary of endurance, you and he share the same suffering, the same burning muscles, and the same willpower that refuses to give in.

Conclusion

The next time you watch a soccer game and yell angrily from the stands or in front of the screen at a player because he didn’t get to the ball in the 85th minute, pause for a moment and remember that he may have just finished a grueling 10-kilometer run while you’re sitting on your comfortable couch yelling at him to “go get it.” Modern soccer no longer relies solely on individual skill; rather, it has become Running as Sports An exceptional team that relies on top-class runners who possess the added talent of ball control.

Now, what about you?
