UAE Runners: From Four Friends to Marathons Around the World
A community began Emirati Runners (UAE Runner) What started as a simple idea that brought four friends together has grown into one of Dubai’s up-and-coming running communities. From solo runs to international races, a team has emerged that now includes more than 40 members of different nationalities and backgrounds, who train together and share their passion for running both within the UAE and abroad.
The Beginnings of the UAE Runners: Four Friends and One Passion
The story begins in May 2025. At that time, there were no concrete plans to start a running team, and the four friends weren’t thinking about building a large community or developing a formal training program. All they had in common was a love of running and a desire to participate in new races.
They would book their own tickets and cover their own travel expenses, then head to different cities to take part in athletic experiences unlike their usual daily training routines. These trips gave them the opportunity to run on new streets, learn about diverse cultures, and meet runners who shared their passion.
As time went on, it was no longer just about a single race or a one-time run. The friends discovered that running becomes more fun when the preparations and achievements become a shared experience. That’s when the idea came about UAE Runners; A running community that preserves the spirit of friendship that started it all, while also opening the door to others who want to run as part of a supportive group.
The group didn’t grow through a major campaign or elaborate promotional efforts. The idea spread organically among friends and people interested in running, and new members gradually joined the training sessions. And so, the small group grew into a community of more than 40 active members.
A running community that reflects the diversity of Dubai
Who participates in one of the training sessions UAE Runners in Dubai One quickly notices the diversity of the team members. The community includes runners of various nationalities, cultures, and professions—a diversity that mirrors the nature of Dubai itself, a city where people from different parts of the world live and work.
On the running track, job titles and social backgrounds don’t matter much. A company employee might run alongside a college student, or an experienced runner might share tips with someone participating in their first group training session. What unites everyone is a clear goal: to cover the distance, improve their performance, and help the group reach the finish line.
This diversity has given the team a social dimension in addition to its athletic role. Training isn’t just about logging a certain number of kilometers; it’s also an opportunity to get to know one another, share experiences, and make new friends. As the group meets more often, members feel like they are part of a sports family whose members know when to cheer each other on and when to support a teammate having a tough day.
The importance of this aspect is particularly evident among beginners. Starting to run on your own can be difficult; sometimes your enthusiasm wanes, or you feel like you’re not making enough progress. But having a group waiting for you and training alongside you makes it easier to stay committed and gives every step a different meaning.
Training Schedule for Emirati Runners
The team schedules its training sessions on three main days of the week, allowing members to choose times that fit their work schedules and daily commitments.
The first training session takes place on Thursday evening and gives participants a chance to step away from the workplace and end the week on an active note. Members don’t need to set aside an entire morning or change their weekly schedule for this session, making it ideal for many employees and those with busy schedules.
Saturday and Sunday workouts take place in the morning and are usually dedicated to long-distance running. Starting early helps runners take advantage of quieter roads and conditions that are more conducive to running, especially during the times of day when temperatures in Dubai rise later in the day.
Not all team members train at the same pace. Therefore, the group relies on dividing the participants into Speed Groups Suitable for all skill levels. Experienced runners can join a group that focuses on increasing the pace and improving times, while beginners can choose a more relaxed group that combines light jogging with walking when needed.
This system alleviates one of the most common concerns among those who want to join running communities: the fear of falling behind the group. The goal is not to force everyone to follow a single pace, but rather to provide a space where each person can train according to their current ability and then gradually improve.
Having a group that matches your pace also means that participants won't have to run alone all the time. They'll be surrounded by people facing the same challenges and working toward similar goals, which makes training safer and more enjoyable.
Is this group suitable for beginners in running?
It is not required to join UAE Runners Community Previous experience in marathon racing is not required, nor do participants need to have achieved a specific time before attending the first training session. The team welcomes runners of all levels, from those accustomed to long distances to people just starting their athletic journey.
For a beginner, the first step might simply be to commit to showing up and running a short distance. After several workouts, the body begins to adapt, breathing becomes more regular, and endurance improves. These small improvements are what make a difference in the long run.
Experienced runners, on the other hand, benefit from having teammates to train with as they prepare for a race or a new personal best. Running in a group helps maintain a steady pace and provides a level of encouragement that’s hard to come by when doing all your workouts alone.
The core philosophy within the team is that every runner has their own starting point. There is no need to compare one’s personal experience with that of others, because true progress is measured by what a person can achieve compared to their previous level.

From the Streets of Dubai to the World's Race Tracks
One feature the team has maintained since its inception is the connection between running, travel, and discovering new places. The members have UAE Runners Their passion took them to a number of cities around the world, and they participated in races held in Cape Town, Istanbul, Miami, Rio de Janeiro, and Beijing.
Each of these cities offers a unique experience. Running in Cape Town is all about nature and mountains, while Istanbul gives participants the chance to run through a city that spans the continents of Asia and Europe. In Miami, runners face a coastal climate and high humidity, while Rio de Janeiro offers a course surrounded by the city’s energy and vibrancy. As for Beijing, it offers an experience steeped in history and races that attract participants from many regions.
International participation does not mean engaging in Race That’s it. The experience begins weeks or months before reaching the starting line, with training and planning. Then come the travel arrangements and adjusting to the weather, the time difference, and the nature of the course. After the race is over, the runner returns to the group with new experiences to share with the rest of the members.
It is important, however, to clarify that these international engagements are the result of individual initiatives by team members. They are not trips funded or officially organized by the community administration; rather, each member covers their own travel and registration costs and makes their own arrangements for participation.
Although these runs are individual endeavors, the participants carry with them the identity of the community in which they train. And when the team’s name appears in a new city, their participation becomes a way to highlight the growing presence of running communities in the UAE.
Upcoming Destinations for the Team's Runners
The members’ plans don’t stop at the cities where they’ve already competed. In the next phase, their attention is turning to new destinations, including Rome, Kuwait, and Doha.
Rome offers an experience that combines running with the city’s history and famous landmarks. In contrast, the races in Kuwait and Doha are nearby events that allow runners to participate in regional sporting events and connect with running communities in the Gulf countries.
Preparation for these events begins well in advance of the travel date. Running a long race requires gradually increasing distances, scheduling rest periods, and paying attention to nutrition and hydration. Every runner also needs to understand the nature of the course and the expected weather so as not to arrive on race day without proper preparation.
For the team members, the value of participating isn't limited to the medal alone. Every new race is a test of what they've achieved during months of training and an opportunity to discover new limits to their endurance.
How do you join Emirates Runners?
Join UAE Runners It's free and doesn't require a subscription or any lengthy procedures. Those interested in participating can follow The team's official social media accounts, where details about the training sessions, meeting locations, and start times are posted.
Once they know the date, participants can show up in appropriate clothing and running shoes, then join the pace group that best matches their level. Beginners should start off slowly and avoid trying to keep up with the faster runners right from their first training session.
It’s also helpful to drink an adequate amount of water before your workout, pay attention to the weather, and inform the group leaders of any previous injuries or issues that might affect your ability to run. The goal at the beginning isn’t to run as far as possible, but to establish a habit that you can stick with.
With regular practice, your weekly runs may evolve into a bigger goal: running five kilometers without stopping, competing in your first official race, training for a half-marathon, and perhaps eventually traveling to participate in Marathon Global.
