1. The Beginning and the First Five Kilometers

When did I start thinking about practicing Running as Sports Why did I start running? And what was it like when I first started running?

It all started in 2017 when my children joined a local sports team, where they had to attend daily practices lasting between an hour and a half and two hours each, Since I live about 20 kilometers away from the sports club and the practices took place during rush hour when employees were leaving work, I had to find a way to keep myself busy during that time and help me stick with this activity for the sake of my children. After thinking it over for several days, I decided on running and reading.

Soccer has always been my love and passion; I’ve played it and followed its news and matches with all my heart. However, after many years of playing the game, I began to notice the effects of aging on my technique and skills. Furthermore, when a friend suffered a severe knee injury during a match and was forced to stay home for three consecutive months with his leg elevated above hip level, it made me realize I needed to switch sports. It is true that injuries in sports are a matter of fate, but different sports vary in the level of injury risk they entail. Given the high risk of injury in soccer and the resulting inability to work or perform other daily tasks, and since I had already started taking the children to their daily practices, I began jogging around the sports club grounds for a distance of no more than 500 meters for about 5 minutes. I continued jogging this distance for nearly six months, and then I began to gradually increase the distance until I reached 5 kilometers about a full year after I started.

Here, based on my limited experience with running, I must note that running five kilometers—for someone who has never run before—typically takes no more than three months of training on average. This is a personal estimate based on my modest experience and is not grounded in scientific studies or facts.

The starting gun went off and the runners took off. If you’ve never participated in a running race before, you might not realize that this initial surge by the front-runners pulls you into trying to keep up with their pace, and that’s exactly what happened to me. Even though I knew I should avoid a strong start, my enthusiasm pushed me to keep up with them. Still, I felt like I was running well and that I…

I started to find myself getting more into the sport, and I’ve really started to love it. Contrary to what I used to think as a child—that this sport was meaningless because running has no specific goal, unlike soccer or basketball, for example, where you aim to score a goal that enables your team to win—I’ve found it to be a lot of fun, especially when participating in races. So I decided to participate in

It is said that failure is the path to success, and it is also said that failure is an opportunity that allows you to start over in a better way and with greater wisdom. After I finished the half-marathon, I realized that my relationship with running was no longer just a passing phase; I knew it was a lasting one, and my wife, my brothers, my family, and my children realized that too. My wife once asked me, in her clever, sly way, “How…
