2- 10 Kilometers

Through my regular running routine, my physical fitness has improved significantly, and I am now able to run five kilometers fairly well. It’s important to note here that “fairly well” does not mean “easily,” but rather “capable of,” since I am now able to Run It took some effort to cover that distance, and it just so happened that during that period I attended a conference related to my job, and one of the activities organized by the conference organizers was Race Participants can run or walk the five-kilometer course, depending on their preference. I recall that I placed sixty-third out of about two hundred participants.

That result encouraged me to keep running, but I needed to find a way to stay motivated. After searching online, I found a group on a social media site called (Running Amman) and decided to join them on one of their runs, just to try it out

One Friday morning in December 2018, I remember it was very cold, and after a long internal debate, I decided to go out for a run with that group. We were supposed to meet in front of one of Amman’s lovely cafes at a quarter to eight, with the run set to start at eight sharp. I arrived twenty minutes before the meeting time and found only one person there—I didn’t know if he was part of the group or not. I waited in my car for ten minutes, but no one else showed up. I asked him, “Are you waiting for the running group?” He replied, “Yes.” “Do you think they’ll come?” I asked. “Yes,” he said, “they usually arrive right on time or a few minutes early.” A few minutes later, the runners began to arrive. There were about twenty runners of various ages, ranging from young adults in their early twenties to those over fifty. At exactly 8:00 a.m., we took a group photo and started running.

It was a tough day; despite my earnest attempts to keep up with the group, I couldn’t catch up to any of them, and I lost my running rhythm after I found it impossible to maintain their pace. I slowed down as exhaustion set in and jogged back to my car. I checked my phone and was very pleased to see that I had run eight kilometers, but all I wanted at that moment was to go home, have breakfast, and get some much-needed rest.

The following week, I joined the group again and ran ten kilometers. I was so happy that day—I, who had never imagined I could run even two kilometers, managed to run ten that day thanks to that wonderful group. I decided to join them every Friday, and I only missed a session on rare occasions and for unavoidable reasons.

For most members of the group, a 10-kilometer run was the minimum distance they covered on weekends. Keeping up with them wasn’t exactly extremely difficult, but it was certainly challenging. I looked for anyone among them who ran less than ten kilometers so I could find an excuse to stop, but my efforts were in vain. That really was the minimum. I managed to run ten kilometers for several consecutive Fridays before finally stopping, after exhaustion got the better of me and following lengthy internal debates about whether to stop sooner.

I started to find myself getting more into the sport, and I’ve really started to love it. Contrary to what I used to think as a child—that this sport was meaningless because running has no specific goal, unlike soccer or basketball, for example, where you aim to score a goal that enables your team to win—I’ve found it to be a lot of fun, especially when participating in races. So I decided to participate in

The starting gun went off and the runners took off. If you’ve never participated in a running race before, you might not realize that this initial surge by the front-runners pulls you into trying to keep up with their pace, and that’s exactly what happened to me. Even though I knew I should avoid a strong start, my enthusiasm pushed me to keep up with them. Still, I felt like I was running well and that I…
