Masafat Running Club, Saudi Arabia’s first Olympic-certified running club, is redefining community sports | Urkod

The Beginnings of the Masafat Running Club

In 2007, when the culture of community running was still in its tentative infancy in the region—a time when the sight of amateur runners jogging through the streets of our Arab cities was still an unfamiliar one—the city of Jeddah, the Bride of the Red Sea, witnessed a spontaneous, silent movement. Imagine the scene: a small group of friends and running enthusiasts gathering in the early mornings or quiet evenings to train together. They had no organization to bring them together, no administrative headquarters to unite them, and not even a name by which to identify themselves. Their sole motivation was passion and their desire to coordinate their travel and participation in international races and marathons around the world.

Back then, none of these runners could have imagined that this simple gathering, filled with dreams, would one day become one of the most important community sports initiatives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This passion continued to grow until 2012, when the group decided to transform their passion into a formal, institutional sports organization with a name that reflected the breadth of their vision and the scope of their ambition: “Masafat” Club.

Captain Khalid Yamani... The Architect of Sports Vision

Exceptional organizations are driven by visionary insight and boundless leadership. Here, the name Captain Khalid Yamani stands out—the man who didn’t stop at founding a community sports club, but took it upon himself to build a comprehensive community system in the city of Jeddah. Captain Khalid has a profound philosophy that goes beyond simply burning calories or achieving new personal bests; his vision has been clear and unwavering from day one: “Running is not a sport exclusive to the elite or professional athletes alone; rather, it is an inherent right of every individual in society, at every stage of their life.”.

With this belief, Captain Khalid transformed the Masafat Club from a mere space for physical training into a comprehensive platform for community programs, competitions, and mental and athletic training, creating an inclusive environment that welcomes everyone without exception.

From get-togethers with friends to Olympic qualification and the podium

Nadi Masafat is a story of struggle and success; it is a journey that began in 2007 and continues to this day—a story worth telling. The biggest and most remarkable transformation in the history of this community took place in 2016, when the team cemented its place in the annals of Saudi sports, officially becoming “the first Saudi sports group to receive accreditation from the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.” This accreditation was not merely a piece of paper; rather, it was official recognition from the country’s highest sports authority of the influence of sports communities and their capacity for change.

This structured approach and deliberate growth remind us of the inspiring stories we’ve documented in other Arab sports communities, but “Masafat” has taken steps toward even broader and more expansive horizons. In 2023, the club’s tremendous efforts were crowned with its win of the “Best Sports Initiative in the Kingdom” award, presented by the Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA), proving that sincere work is earned, not given.

What awaits you on the trails of the “Masafat Running Club”?

The Masafat Club doesn't rely on chance; every step is carefully planned and thought out to serve runners of all levels. If you decide to join them, here is the energetic schedule that awaits you:

Basic training sessions are held three days a week: Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. These sessions are designed to ensure you maintain your fitness and gradually improve your performance. But the club doesn’t limit itself to the asphalt streets and the Jeddah Corniche; to break the routine and challenge members’ abilities, the club organizes a monthly trail run in the surrounding hills and mountains, which gives runners tremendous physical strength and neuromuscular coordination that cannot be achieved on flat streets.

In addition, the club pays special attention to beginners. It offers a summer program specifically for beginners, as well as a special mid-season program designed to prepare non-athletes and gradually introduce them to the world of running without putting them at risk of injury or early burnout. As for distances, the club supports all goals—whether you want to safely complete your first 5 kilometers or aspire to tackle grueling “ultra-marathons” (Ultra-Marathon), you’ll find someone here to guide you and run alongside you. And the best part? All this professional guidance and participation is free and open to everyone—all you have to do is show up at the announced training location to become part of this family.

The Language of Numbers That Comes to Life

The club’s success is evident in reality, and the numbers speak for themselves. Today, the club has a solid core of 100 regular members who are committed to daily training. But its true impact extends to more than 2,000 participants annually who take part in the club’s various events and programs.

Masafat Club didn’t stop at participating in races; it has evolved into a creator and organizer of major sporting events. Among the most prominent events the team organizes with passion and professionalism are: the “Run in the Spirit of Green” race, which brings the streets of Jeddah to life in celebration of Saudi National Day; the “Bride Marathon,” which has become a landmark event on the local sports calendar; and a continuous series of community events and international participations.

Beyond Recreational Running... The Podiums

Although the club’s core mission is to promote a culture of running as a community sport for everyone, there’s no limit to what we can achieve here. Masafat members don’t just run for fun and health; this community has produced an elite group of professional runners who have moved beyond the amateur level.

Many of the club’s outstanding members are recruited to join competitive track and field teams at official clubs, where they compete in fierce local and international competitions. In fact, some of them have achieved an athlete’s greatest dream: being selected to represent the “Saudi National Track and Field Team,” wearing their country’s colors and competing in major sporting events. This is the true meaning of discovering talent on the city’s streets and guiding it to the podium.

A Run in Line with Vision 2030

Masafat Club does not operate in isolation from the country’s overall direction; rather, it proudly and wholeheartedly dedicates itself to serving the goals of “Saudi Vision 2030,“ specifically the goal of building a ”vibrant and active society“ and improving quality of life. The club’s mission extends beyond the track; it seeks to promote sports in general—and running in particular—in all their dimensions: as a recreational activity that relieves the stresses of life; as a health-promoting activity that prevents disease; as a social activity that builds bridges of communication between people; and, finally, as a competitive sport that raises the ”Green Flag” at international events.

How do you secure your spot at the starting line?

Joining the Masafat Club isn't complicated, and it doesn't require paying exorbitant membership fees or going through tedious paperwork; membership is completely free. All you need is a pair of comfortable sneakers and a sincere commitment to change. Follow the group’s official Instagram account for ongoing announcements and updates (@masafat_sa), and simply head to the meeting point at the time and place specified in the announcement. There are no prerequisites—just come as you are, and let the team spirit take care of the rest.

Conclusion

Masafat Club is much more than just a sports team; it is a living, breathing, and dynamic story of inspiration. It’s a story that began with a chance encounter among a group of friends on the streets of Jeddah and has grown into the first Olympic-recognized organization—a massive sports movement representing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and making its mark on the global racing scene. Every day, they prove that humble beginnings, fueled by passion, can redefine the entire world of community sports.
